You may not immediately think of a wonderful beach day. Yet a beautiful coastal strip is available within an hour’s drive with many delicious fish restaurants located on a fine white sandy beach

Within the Riviera della Versilia area, Forte dei Marmi is one of the most popular resorts. The name of this place literally means marble fort. Forte dei Marmi therefore has a magnificent fortress that was built around 1700.

Of course the place also has a strong link with the marble that is used in the place name. From the 16th there was an important port for transporting marble in this place. This marble came from mines near Massa and Carrara and was shipped from Forte dei Marmi to other places.

Although the fort was initially built to defend the coast, it was soon used primarily as storage for the many marble. At this time, Forte dei Marmi was not much more than the fort and the harbor, but nowadays there is much to do in this beautiful seaside resort. A day out in Forte dei Marmi is therefore recommended.
